The Importance of Choosing the Right Email Address

2 minute read

A surprising number of people make the mistake of using an email address in their CV that isn’t really appropriate or professional. Let’s be honest: most of us created our first email address when we were around 13 years old (something like sharpshooter112@mail.com), and while it served us perfectly well during our teenage years, many forget that such an address also reflects the level of maturity we had at that age — which isn’t necessarily an advantage in every situation.

Of course, the industry you’re applying to also matters. It’s perfectly understandable that a more playful email address, such as "bubucibocika94@mail.com", might even fit a job application for a toy store, as it conveys light-heartedness, cheerfulness, and a friendly personality. But using the same address when applying for a position in the financial sector would be a clear mistake. Just imagine walking into a high-level interview at the World Bank, and your suit-and-tie interviewer spots the email address "badasskid88@mail.com" on your résumé. Chances are, you won’t be their first choice.

Naturally, we all have old email addresses that might feel embarrassing as adults, but you’re under no obligation to use them in your application. The internet is full of free email providers, and creating a new address takes barely three minutes — so don’t let that hold you back. At CVRocker, it’s also no problem if you registered with a different email address: in your profile, you can easily specify which address should appear on your résumé.
